Mr Demus King joined the Minerals Council of Australia in October 2018 as General Manager Trade and Investment, continuing a career of almost 20 years on resources and energy. Prior to joining the Minerals Council of Australia, Demus progressed several key mining and oil & gas regulatory issues as a consultant, including a report on the strengths and weaknesses of the oil and gas regulatory regimes in Australia. In 2017 and June 2018 Demus worked in Government Relations Coal at BHP, resolving a number of issues affecting coal operations in NSW and Queensland. Between 2013 and 2016 Demus worked in the Australian Government as head of offshore oil and gas supporting the exploration and development of the offshore industry, its economic regulation and investment attraction. During this time he also oversaw environmental regulatory reforms, which reduced burden on industry while maintaining high standards of environmental protection.
Between 2008 and 2013 Demus was responsible for International and Resources and Energy Policy, developing an integrated resources and energy policy framework, and an assessment of Australia’s electricity, gas and liquid fuel security.
Demus has a Bachelor of Economics (hons) from James Cook University and a Chevening Fellowship from Edinburgh University.
