Carlos Díaz is the General Manager of Lithium at SQM (Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile), one of the leading companies in lithium production worldwide and a key player in the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy. With more than 20 years of experience in the mining and natural resources industry, Diaz has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility.
Carlos Díaz is an Industrial Civil Engineer from the Catholic University, and is part of a group of professionals who have been at SQM all their professional lives, having joined the company 27 years ago through the tip of a university classmate.
He held various roles within SQM, starting as a planning engineer and then moving through the commercial, logistics and operational areas, where he was able to develop a deep understanding of the lithium value chain, from extraction to processing and commercialization. This experience has allowed him to lead projects that not only seek to optimize production, but also improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Today, its main challenges are to continue consolidating the growth of the lithium industry in Chile in addition to the projects in China and Australia.
Under his leadership, SQM has implemented a series of innovative initiatives that have led the company to be recognized for its focus on sustainability, innovation, technological development, among others. An example of this has been the integration of renewable energies in operations, the development of cleaner extraction technologies and the responsible management of water resources in the Salar de Atacama region, where one of the largest lithium reserves in the world is located. In addition, it has fostered the creation of strategic alliances with academic institutions and international organizations to advance in the research and development of more sustainable technologies.
